Winter Blues

This time of year can be trying for many people. The days are darker and colder. Many people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder and are treated by their physicians for it. Here are some tips to try if you feel like you need a little help in beating the winter blues. These tips are not to be used in place of seeing a medical professional.

Get outdoors

Especially on the sunnier days, try making some time to get out and soak in the fresh air. Take your dog for a walk, go around the block, or take a hike in the woods. You would be amazed what a dose of fresh air can do for the spirits.

Invest in a light therapy lamp

Place it next to your desk and try using it at least one hour each day. Change out your regular light bulbs with full spectrum light bulbs.

Exercise
Whether it is during your scheduled outside time to get fresh air or at your home or local gym, doing something aerobically at least a half hour each day will boost your mood.

Supplements

SAM-e is a naturally occurring bodily component that helps regulate neurotransmitters that help maintain a positive mood. Vitamin D3 has been called the sunshine vitamin and is essential when the daylight hours are shorter. Fish oil can relieve the general levels of anxiety. Supplementing with these nutrients can have a very positive effect on your health and mood. Check with your local naturopath.

Nutrition

Eating meals full of fruits and vegetables with little to no processed foods is a must. The more nutrients your body gets, the better. Raw fruits and vegetables and nourishing soups are a must this time of year. Decrease and limit sugar or grains from your diet.

Get adequate sleep

Aim to sleep 7-9 hours a night on the same schedule each night. Make this a sacred time for your body to rest and heal.

Visit with friends

Get off the social media and connect with friends at a local coffee shop or go out to dinner. There’s nothing better than time spent in person with a good friend.

Get crafty

When the weather outside is frightful, feeding your inner creative self is delightful. Grab some paints or craft sets and get artistic. Have you ever made a vision board? Gather some friends around New Year’s and create a board full of intentions for the upcoming year.

The gray cold days do not need to get you down. Incorporate these tips into your day and watch your days become brighter. Before you know it, spring will be on your doorstep.
